5 Fun and Unique Ways to Celebrate Mother’s Day

Now that the long, cold winter has given way to springtime, that means Mother’s Day is right around the corner. If you’re like most, Mom represents one of the most special people in your life. For that reason alone, this year might be a great time to move beyond the standard “flowers and a card” gift. Here are five fun and unique ways to celebrate Mother’s Day.

1. Plan a “Daycation”
You don’t have to fly Mom down to Florida to give her a special day. If you check out your state’s tourism website, you may find a few entertainment gems right in your own backyard.

I did a quick search for the state in which I live (Georgia) and found plenty of options that my mother might be interested in: history museums, hiking, golf outings, wineries and more. Plan a day trip for your mom – you can head out and return home in one day, but still provide her with a special experience.

2. Have a Movie Day
Schedule a “movie day” with Mom and your family at home to take in some of her favorite flicks. If you’re unsure of which movies to go with, try some that are particularly suited for Mother’s Day such as “Steel Magnolias”, “Terms of Endearment” or “The Sound of Music”. Have some popcorn, drinks, and her favorite candy ready as well.

If you don’t want to stay in, hit up the movie theater for a matinee. Tickets to daytime showings are often much more affordable than those in the evening.

3. Give Mom a Day Free of Chores
If Mom is responsible for household chores, giving her a day off from all of these duties might make for a perfect gift. Take care of all the meal preparation, vacuum the house, tidy up the bedrooms, and give the bathrooms a good scrubbing.

4. Give Back to Your Community
To really go outside the box, schedule a Mother’s Day experience where you and Mom volunteer at a local soup kitchen, an animal shelter, or even an art museum. You get to spend the entire day with her and give back to the community at the same time.

5. A Day of Shopping
If your mom loves shopping, a shopping spree might be the perfect gift, especially if she has any necessities, such as a new clothes. Find out her favorite retailers. Then, visit a website such as Raise.com or Gift Card Granny and purchase gift cards at a discount. If you can’t find out her favorite stores in advance, purchase a generic gift card for an amount your budget can handle. That way, instead of choosing the gift for her, Mom gets to make the decision.

Bonus Idea: Beauty Box Subscription
If your mom is into beauty products, getting her a monthly beauty box subscription as a gift is a great option. The cost is affordable and there are a variety of options that will help mom to easily explore new products and look her best.

Final Thoughts
Remember, when it comes to Mother’s Day, it’s not how much money you spend, it’s the thought that you put into the gift. Your mom probably doesn’t care whether you spend $5 or $5,000 – she wants something memorable. Try one or more of the above suggestions, and you may have a Mother’s Day celebration that both you and Mom will treasure for a lifetime.
