5 Tips for Getting Fit with Your Kids
Are your kids getting in the way of your fitness goals? Many women I know struggle to find the time to get fit after they have children, but one of the best gifts you can give your children is a healthy mom. Make getting fit a priority this year for the entire family.
While your fitness routine might look a little different after children, it is still possible to stay fit with little ones in your home. Not only is it possible, it’s important! If you don’t take care of yourself, who is going to? Making your health a priority is a great example for your children and gives you more energy to manage your busy life.
Here are five tips to help you stay active with kids.
1. Get moving with your kids!
Have you ever observed parents and kids at a park? Most parents sit or stand by their kids, while the children run wildly, burning tons of calories during their playtime.
Instead of sitting back and watching your kids play, join them! A playground is a great place to exercise and a few games of tag will have you sweating and feeling like you had a great workout!
If your children are little, put them in the stroller and walk with them for 30 minutes several times a week. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, walk through a shopping center in the middle of the day when there aren’t many shoppers out.
2. Be a fit family.
If your kids are old enough to begin a workout program, exercise with them! It is easy to create modified, kid friendly workouts that your kids can do with you.
Find something you can do as a whole family that promotes a healthier lifestyle. It could be riding bikes (little ones can ride in a trailer or bike seat), taking walks, running, swimming, kayaking, yoga, dance, cross training, or hiking.
Find what works for your family (and your climate) and invest in some equipment for the entire family.
3. Join a gym with free child care.
If you like working out in a gym, make sure your gym has free child care for your children. I recommend finding a gym that has fitness programs for your children, instead of just daycare, so at a young age they are encouraged to pursue a healthy lifestyle.
Also, don’t just pick the kids up and leave once you are finished with your workout. Take them to the basketball courts or other family friendly area of the gym and get active with your kids. Kids want to be like their parents (especially when they are younger), so the more you embrace an active lifestyle with them, the more likely they are going to do it once they are on their own.
4. Exercise at home using a video program or free YouTube videos.
If a gym membership is not in your budget, consider purchasing a workout program on DVD. Many programs take between thirty to forty-five minutes every day or every other day and can be done while your children are napping, at school, or before they get up in the morning.
Find a program that does not need a lot of special equipment, especially if you live in a small space.
If you don’t want to invest in workout program, YouTube and Pinterest have thousands of free workouts available online. There are entire workouts available for free and you can try several before purchasing any equipment or products.
5. Give your kids something special to do during your exercise time.
If your children have outgrown naptime, set aside a busy box or a special computer or tablet game they can play while you workout.
Let them know you are going to be busy for the next 30 minutes and that no interruptions are allowed unless it is an emergency. Reward them after the workout with a special snack, game, or story.
