The Best Things to Buy in September

Retailers offer steep discounts on certain items each month, so if you learn when the best time to buy is, you’ll get a great deal. When it is time for the next year’s model to be released, last year’s model is marked down to a clearance price to make room for new inventory. Here are the best things to buy in September.Best Buys in September - Cars

Lawn Mowers and Grills

It’s the end of the grilling and mowing season, so stores need to get rid of their existing inventory to make room for fall and winter merchandise. Most people do not want to store them for the winter, so their prices drop dramatically in September each year. If you need a new grill or mower, start shopping just after Labor Day for the best deals.

Car manufacturers release the next year’s model at the end of the current year, so current models are marked down so they sell quickly. Most major financing companies also offer better rates at this time of the year, so you’ll save on interest as well as the price of the car. This is also a good time to shop for a lease if you’d rather lease a car than buy one.

New appliance models come out at the end of the year, so current models are discounted. You’ll likely find the best discounts at the end of September, but you’ll find a better selection of appliances in the beginning of September. Most types of appliances are marked down, but refrigerators are usually marked down in May and not September.

The new riding season starts in the early fall, so last year’s models are discounted.

School Supplies

Once school starts in your area, stores will start to clearance their leftover back to school inventory. You can find great deals on clothing, book bags and school supplies.

Another one of the best things to buy in September is wine. Late summer and fall is harvest time, so wineries will have extra stock they want to clear out.

Garden centers and greenhouses do not want to store their plants all winter, so they offer deep discounts to clear them out. Look for perennials like daisies, daylilies and hostas because they can be planted in the fall with great success.

If you are going to travel for the holiday season, look for the best prices in September. Most airfare prices are cheaper two months before the flight, so this is the best time to book holiday travel.

September is generally the best time to buy these items, so be patient and wait for the price to drop if you can. You can save even more by using coupons; appliances and school supplies often have coupons available to help you save even more off the low price.

  1. We just bought a new washer and dryer and got a great deal.
Samsung is offering kickbacks to some retailers on certain models, and although it was not posted, the honest salesman worked it into the price for us… saving us $180 per appliance! We also got free delivery after rebate, saving us another $80.
    We are happy!

  2. I heard that it is a good time to buy aluminum siding as well! >:-)
