Cost Saving Tips for School Supplies & Uniforms

A new school year will soon be upon us. For parents, this means money spent on school supplies and uniforms – which can be scary with all that kids want and need these days! However, these required purchases do not have to empty your wallet. Read on to find out how you can cut the costs for school supplies and uniforms this school year!

Save Money on School Supplies

1. Find out the necessities from your child’s new teacher.
These days, most teachers give out a supply list for their classrooms. This will tell you exactly what you need to purchase for your child before the first day of school. Don’t begin your back to school shopping before you have this list and stick to it to avoid any extra costs.

2. Scour sales for the best deals.
Avoid going to just a single store in your area when shopping for school supplies. You’ll likely find the best deals by shopping at more than one location. Check out the ads each week leading up to the start of school and buy as you find great prices. Just don’t waste too much gas driving to multiple stores that are far from home.

3. Buy enough for the school year, but no more.
Make sure that you get enough school supplies to last your child through the entire year. Prices will return to normal a few weeks after the first day of school and you can’t save money if you have to replenish their pencils just after winter vacation!

On the other hand, don’t feel obligated to buy more than your kids need. This will cause the extra supplies to be wasted or forgotten about before the next school year comes around.

4. Clip coupons and utilize store rewards programs.
Even though there will be back to school deals, most stores will still accept coupons for even more cost saving! Be sure to utilize rewards that are store-specific as well. Many will offer special discounts on school supplies the week or two prior to a new school year.

Cut Costs on School Uniforms

1. Learn the dress code so you don’t waste money.
You do not want to purchase items that your kids cannot wear to school. Sure, they may want them for weekend attire, however if you are cutting costs, items purchased for school uniforms need to be used for that purpose.

2. Purchase gently used uniforms.
It is possible to find uniform pieces on eBay, Craigslist, or even your local consignment shops for a fraction of the cost of buying new. Browse online and in your area to cut the cost spent on your child’s uniforms this school year.

3. Get a few basic articles of clothing to mix and match.
When school uniforms are required, most schools have a limit on what your children can wear.

There may be certain colors or styles of tops and bottoms. When you find out the dress code, just get enough outfits to last one school week. The child can mix and match the pieces to create new looks without you having to spend more cash!

  2. Thanks for sharing the useful tips. .

  3. I am trying to figure out what applies to my situation, as I am a teacher (and parent) at a VERY small school. Most people already know me, my personality and each other. They have already been to my blog, read my FAQ and visited the classroom. The ones who are trying to be proactive by being confrontational (I love that line) have not waited until back to school night to begin their proactiveness.

We have btsn this Thursday, and here is what I am struggling with this Labor Day morning. I am still in the process of setting up the Daily 3 routines with my students. However, I have this great bulletin board that is eventually going to have QR codes linked to student blog posts. Do I scrap the order of my plans for this week and work hard to get these ready for Thursday night? If I don’t, no one will ever see the QR codes. If I do, some students might not be finished by Thursday night…
