Old Fashioned Barbecue Sauce

This delicious BBQ sauce can be used to baste ribs, meat, burgers, even game. Make ahead and freeze in plastic bags. Just heat up gently over a fire or stove.

Old Fashioned Barbecue Sauce

Yield: Makes 2-1/2 cups

Old Fashioned Barbecue Sauce


  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • ¼ cup minced onions
  • ¼ cup olive oil or butter
  • 2 cups canned beef broth or 2 beef bouillon cubes dissolved in water
  • ¼ cup vinegar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp dry mustard
  • 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/8 tsp Sriracha or Tabasco sauce
  • 2 tblsp honey


  1. Sauté the onion and garlic in oil or butter until just softened. Add the bullion and vinegar.
  2. Mix the dry spices with the Worcestershire, honey and Tabasco or Sriracha. Add to the bullion mixture and heat for 5 minutes, keeping it just below the boiling point.
  3. Use, refrigerate or freeze.

Quick BBQ Sauce Option:

Yield: Makes 1 1/2 cups
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • ¼ cup vinegar
  • 1 tblsp honey
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tblsp mustard
  • ¼ cup hot water

Stir all ingredients together, heat in a pan over a low fire. Thin with hot water to get the consistency you like.
