ADVANCING THE COMMON GOOD
Together, Valpak and United Way are harnessing our shared commitment and engagement in local communities across America to fight for the health, education and financial stability of every person in every community.
As we head into a new school year, many parents of younger children are thinking about what they need to be doing to get their kids ready for kindergarten. Here’s what the experts advise: play, sing, read, and talk with your child about what’s going on around them. Seriously. It’s not about work sheets, digital learning games or flash cards. Kids are born learning. From the beginning, they’re absorbing the things that will help them develop.
We all know that a quality education begins with reading. In fact, kids who read proficiently by third grade are more likely to graduate high school. Yet, only 36% of fourth-grade students in the United States are proficient (or better) in reading according to National Assessment of Educational Progress. It’s a troubling statistic, one that can have dire consequences on an individual’s success in school, work and life.
As a global education initiative of United Way Worldwide, Born Learning has given more than 15 million parents in 14 countries the essential education tools they need to make the most of their children’s early years. Each workshop is led by trained professionals—usually local teachers, principals or other education staff—and focuses on topics specific to children younger than five years old such as relationship building, language skills, nutrition and health, as well as how children learn.
Volunteering can be a fun, satisfying and productive way for families to unite. Not only is it a great way for parents to spend time with their children but it also helps set a good example AND helps the community. Be sure to check out your local United Way for a range of volunteer activities and read about the five reasons why volunteering is as important to kids’ well-being and maturity as their other regular activities like sports and clubs.
