(LARGO, FL - May 1, 2013) — On May 11 postal carriers with The National Association of Letter Carriers’ (NALC) will collect non-perishable food from customers along their routes, and deliver the food to local food banks, hoping to replenish food pantries throughout the United States with the Stamp Out Hunger campaign — the country’s largest one day food drive.

Stamp Out Hunger

To support the NALC’s efforts, Valpak Direct Marketing Systems featured the event on 40 million Valpak envelopes distributed across the United States. Taking part in the food drive for the tenth consecutive year, Valpak reminds the public with The Blue Envelope to do their part and leave food for their mail carrier to help with the food drive. Other sponsors include USPS, Campbell’s Soup Company, AARP, Feeding America, Publix, United Way, AFL-CIO and many others.

Valpak encourages the public to participate by filling up a bag (or more) with items such as soup, cereal, peanut butter, tuna and other non-perishable items. Letter carriers will pick up donations left at the mailbox on Saturday, May 11.

In addition, Valpak has featured a donation per pledge campaign on Facebook, and will donate $1 for each new pledge made to www.facebook.com/valpak. Donations will be made by Valpak up to the value of $5,000 to the Stamp Out Hunger campaign.

The NALC food drive began 21 years ago, noting the severe shortage of food that families encounter in the summer months. With many children receiving food from school programs, families are hit extra hard when children are out of school for the summer. In addition, late spring is often the time when food banks are struggling, as the donations received during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays have long been depleted.

Last year, the NALC Stamp Out Hunger food drive collected 70.5 million pounds in non-perishable donations. Although there were record-breaking results in 2012, according to a survey conducted by Feeding America, “1 in 6 Americans struggle with hunger, including many children.” This year donations are at a greater need than ever.
